FLASHES
Flashes
Flashes are like sparks of light which may be seen in any part of one’s visual field. These flashes of light may be seen because of traction & stretch on the retina during certain changes in vitreous (which is the gel inside the eye) known as posterior vitreous detachment, providing sensory stimulus to the retinal receptors and this gives rise to the sensation of flashes.

Flashes may be a symptom of impending or early retinal detachment. They may be associated with formation of retinal holes or tears. Rarely, specific recurrent patterns of flashes may be a part of migrainous headaches. Sometimes floating black spots or floaters are also seen along with flashes. It is important to consult your eye surgeon if you notice flashes. Repeated flashes are an indication for thorough examination of the retina.
